Subvastus Knee Replacement

Subvastus knee replacement is a muscle-sparing technique designed to reduce injury to the quadriceps during knee replacement. With a traditional approach, the surgeon often enters the knee by cutting through the quadriceps tendon or muscle. With the subvastus approach, the surgeon works underneath the quadriceps muscle, leaving the muscle and tendon intact above the kneecap. By preserving these tissues, patients should experience less pain, regain muscle strength sooner, and find it easier to walk during the early stages of recovery. The subvastus approach still gives surgeons all the access needed to perform a total or partial knee replacement while limiting unnecessary damage to the muscles and tendons around the knee.
