John Mercuri is an orthopedic surgeon and Matt Mercuri is a neurologist — they charted near identical career paths, including their return to Northeast Pennsylvania to practice and settle down.

In the past few years you may have heard or read about robotic surgery. Often, people get the wrong impression and think the surgery is performed by a robot in place of a surgeon. But in fact, a surgeon performs the procedure with the assistance of a robot.

Hip and knee joint replacement is recommended for people with chronic, disabling arthritic joint pain not responding to conservative management, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, weight loss, activity modification, assistive devices, or steroid injections.

Probably no one looks forward to hip or knee replacement. But there’s good news in that recent advances have ushered in a new era of joint replacement for patients in Northeast Pennsylvania.

“The average runner needs several months to prepare for a 13.1-mile race,” says Dr. John Mercuri, orthopaedic surgeon at Geisinger Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine – Scranton and experienced runner. “It takes time to work up the strength and endurance you will need.”

Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton joins Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre and Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital as the only hospitals in northeastern and central Pennsylvania to offer patients robotic-arm–assisted knee and hip replacements with the Mako system.

After earning their medical degrees in New York City, John and Matthew Mercuri returned home to Scranton, giving back to the community they grew up in.

John J. Mercuri, M.D., a Scranton native and an orthopaedic surgeon trained in total joint arthroplasty, has joined the medical staff at Geisinger Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Scranton.
